Young Sounds of Arizona, 2019-2020 season

Summer is almost over and the new season for Young Sounds is about to start. Young Sounds students do not normally meet between mid-June and late August, but Andrew Gross did receive funding to sponsor a three day Jazz Camp with a focus on improvisation and developing aural skills. Some Young Sounds students enrolled in the Camp and others were new to the Program. The camp ended with a public concert in which all the music performed had been learned aurally and each student performed a number of improvisations on each tune they played.

Catching Up with Young Sounds

On Saturday February 24th, the Young Sounds of Arizona ensembles performed at the Scottsdale Canal Convergence Festival. The event was a celebration of music, art and dance all in a space that included public art installations. The invitation to perform came from Kevin Von Brubaker who lives in the Coronado neighborhood in downtown Phoenix that surrounds the AFM Local 586 Union Hall and often hears the Young Sounds ensembles practicing. He works for Scottsdale Arts and thought Young Sounds would be a great fit for the event, turns out he was right!

YOUNG SOUNDS OPENS NEW SEASON AND PREPARES FOR WINTER CONCERT

On September 11th Young Sounds of Arizona began the 2017-18 season with a vibrant first rehearsal. Since then, the three jazz ensembles have been working diligently on a traditional classic jazz repetoire and several tunes to be performed at Phoenix Center for the Arts. The concert on December 11th comes just three months into the new season but all three ensembles have been focused and dedicated to the rehearsals and the music.

Young Sounds Closes the Curtain on 2016-2017 Season

On Tuesday June 6th, Young Sounds of Arizona will close the curtain on our ambitious 2016 – 2017 season. The season included eight performances, all of which were between March and June of 2017, except for the first, in December. With each performance, the students’ intonation improved and their timing grew became more solid. Our students learned to work within their ensembles and to play within the entire group as well.

Young Sounds of Arizona 2017 Guest Artist Program, a Big Success!

This May, Young Sounds was fortunate to have renowned tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi join us for our Guest Artist Program! Mr. Bergonzi’s career has spanned more than four decades. He studied at Lowell University, toured the world with The Dave Brubeck Quartet and actively records, performs and teaches master classes. In addition, he has been teaching improvisation to instrumentalists and vocalists at the New England Conservatory of Music since 1995. Our students were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him!
